Tree removal: compare the complete job, not just the cutting

Describe the concern without trying to diagnose the tree: a dead crown, visible damage, an unwanted tree, construction plans or repeated interference with a structure. Ask whether removal is the recommended option and what alternatives were considered. Pruning, monitoring or a support assessment may be relevant in some cases; the decision belongs to a qualified professional who evaluates the tree and site.

Access and nearby property can change the quote

From a safe location, describe the tree's position relative to the house, garage, fences, neighboring property and utility lines. Note a narrow gate, steps, a steep yard, soft ground or a driveway that must stay accessible. These details help the provider explain how equipment, material handling and property protection affect the proposal.

Ask which areas the crew needs to enter, who arranges any neighbor permission, and how lawn or driveway protection will be handled. Confirm who checks applicable local tree rules or permits. Do not assume the same rules apply to every tree or municipality, and do not approach damaged trees or utility lines to take measurements.

Separate removal, hauling and stump work

Ask what happens to the trunk, larger logs, branches and chips. Leaving cut wood on site, moving it to a specified area and hauling it away are different scopes. State whether you want to keep any wood, and have the provider write down the agreed size, location and disposal responsibilities.

Stump grinding or excavation may be a separate service. Ask whether the removal quote includes either one, how visible roots and grinding debris are handled, and whether soil, grading or planting are excluded. Do not compare a cutting-only quote with a proposal that includes stump work and full debris removal as though they cover the same job.

Compare the same completion standard

Use the same tree list and cleanup request with each company. Ask for separate allowances or exclusions for specialized equipment, extra hauling, stump work, permits and restoration. Confirm whether the assessment itself has a fee and whether the quoted price depends on conditions that still need inspection.

Before authorizing work, record the business name, proposed work window, payment schedule and person who can approve a change.
