QUICK ANSWER

What should a professional tree planting estimate include?

Ask for the tree species and supplied size, delivery, installation, soil or site preparation, cleanup and aftercare responsibilities in writing. Confirm whether you supply the tree or the provider does, and who arranges underground utility marking. A planting quote should identify the exact location and explain any replacement or warranty terms before you agree.

Choose the site before choosing the tree

Tell the provider what you want the tree to do: shade a sitting area, replace a removed tree or add privacy. Describe sunlight, drainage, nearby buildings, overhead lines and the room available for mature growth. Species and final placement should suit the property, not just the size of the tree at delivery.

The International Society of Arboriculture advises matching tree selection to the site and planning follow-up care. Ask the professional to explain their recommendation for your location and how planting timing affects establishment.

Separate tree supply from installation costs

An installation-only quote for a tree you already own is a different scope from nursery selection, delivery and planting. Give each provider the same tree count and size information. Explain gate width, slopes and how far materials must travel from the unloading point.

  • Tree species, quantity, container or root-ball size, and who supplies it.
  • Delivery, access equipment, planting labor and any soil preparation.
  • Mulch, watering instructions, staking if needed, and removal of packaging or surplus material.
  • Responsibility for utility checks, existing stump work and later watering.
  • Total price, payment stages, aftercare visits and any written replacement terms.

Planting after tree or stump removal

Tell the provider if the proposed spot contains an old stump, buried roots or grinding chips. Removal, excavation, soil preparation and planting may require separate estimates. Ask whether a different planting position is appropriate; a cleared surface alone does not establish that the site is ready.

Do not dig until underground utilities have been identified through the appropriate local process. The provider should explain which preparation is included and what you need to arrange.

Agree on aftercare before installation

Ask for site-specific watering and mulch instructions, who checks the tree after installation, and what would require a follow-up assessment. Discuss whether ongoing care is included or billed separately. Tree Care Match does not supply trees, perform planting or guarantee survival; the independent provider sets the scope and terms.

Questions before you call

Can I hire someone to plant a tree I already bought?

Ask whether the provider accepts installation-only work and what tree sizes they can handle. Share the container size, quantity and access details before requesting an estimate. Acceptance and pricing depend on the provider and property.

Is stump removal included in tree planting?

Do not assume it is included. Request separate line items for stump or root work, debris removal, soil preparation and planting so both the finished surface and planting location are agreed.
