A Texas pruning question worth asking

If the job involves oaks, ask about pruning timing and disease precautions before agreeing to routine trimming. Texas A&M Forest Service advises avoiding pruning or wounding oaks from February through June and treating fresh oak wounds promptly throughout the year. Ask the arborist how that guidance applies to your tree and the proposed work.

Compare the whole tree-removal estimate

A low removal price can exclude work you still need. Ask for the tree count and work boundaries in writing, then compare these items:

• Does the price include the full tree, or only the damaged limbs and sections named in the quote?
• How will the crew reach the work area, and is special equipment priced separately?
• Who hauls branches and logs away, and what cleanup will remain for the homeowner?
• Is stump grinding included, and what depth, chip handling and backfill are specified?
• Who checks property approvals and utility constraints before work starts?
• What insurance documentation, payment stages and written change-order terms will the provider supply?

Before a crew arrives
